Lochnagar Crater
The Lochnagar Mine, located south of the village of La Boisselle in the Somme département, was an underground explosive charge secretly planted by British forces during the First World War. It was detonated on July 1, 1916, marking the start of the Battle of the Somme.
Each year, on July 1st, a remembrance service is held at 7:30 AM at the Lochnagar Crater. At the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees are invited to scatter poppy petals into the crater as a poignant tribute to those who lost their lives.
