Planning Trip

Performing a thorough vehicle check is crucial before embarking on a long journey.

  • Engine Oil
  • Coolant Levels
  • Tyre Pressure and Condition
  • Screen Wash
  • MOT and Servicing Status

It's always a good idea to have a basic route planned in advance while staying flexible to make adjustments along the way. We recommend pre-booking your first couple of night stops and then planning the rest of the journey as you go.

Key factors to consider when planning your trip:

  • Duration of the trip
  • Distance you’re willing to travel
  • If on a long sailing we would use freezer blocks to keep fridge cold during sailing.
  • Budget, including fuel, campsite fees, and food
  • Specific destinations or attractions you don’t want to miss.

Before traveling to a new country, it's essential to research whether a vignette is required for driving. In many cases, vignettes are mandatory for using motorways, but if you plan to avoid these roads, you might not need one. Some vignettes are valid for up to a year, so it's worth checking the details in advance. Visit our website for easy access to links and detailed information about vignettes for various countries.

Tolls. We typically avoid using toll roads, but we do have a toll tag for added convenience. With the toll tag, there's no need to stop, fumble for tickets, or make cash payments. Simply drive up to a toll gate marked with a "T," slow down, and the barrier will open automatically. The toll tag is billed monthly, with a small administrative fee applied only during the months it’s in use.

France is transitioning from traditional toll gates to a more modern system using overhead cameras. If you don’t have a toll tag, you can make your payment online or at a designated service station.

In some countries  its illegal to have dash cams, speed camera detection.

Food and Essential items

When traveling, ensure you pack an adequate supply of any necessary medications..

It's best to pack just enough food for a few days. European supermarkets offer an impressive variety of options, including many popular and familiar brands.

Many major supermarkets feature petrol stations, but not all offer pay-at-the-pump services. Instead, some require payment at a kiosk upon exit, which can be challenging to navigate for larger motorhomes due to limited space.

Pet Travel Guide

Before traveling with your pet, make sure their passport is current and up to date. A few days before your return home, schedule a vet appointment to update the passport and ensure your pet receives any required medications or treatments.

Many ferries provide pet-friendly accommodations, such as kennels or designated cages, where your pet can comfortably stay during the journey. In most cases, you'll be allowed to visit them on board. However, for longer sailings, pets typically cannot remain in your vehicle for safety reasons.

It's important to note that pet travel rules differ between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK. For detailed information, refer to the UK government’s pet travel regulations through the links below.

Sat Nav.

There are several sat nav systems specifically designed for motorhomes. These devices allow you to input your motorhome's dimensions, ensuring that routes are calculated with your vehicle's size in mind. Additionally, they often come preloaded with campsite and Aire locations, making your travels even more convenient.

Explore the links below to discover the most popular dedicated motorhome sat nav models.

WiFi

in our motorhome, we use a MiFi box. This handy device allows multiple devices to connect simultaneously and often provides better reception than a smartphone. Plus, it helps save your phone's data! You can find a variety of MiFi boxes available online. Be sure to choose one that’s unlocked, so you can use it with different SIM cards. If you're in France, you can easily purchase a SIM card at most supermarkets.
